Chapter 12

I was ready; Tony should be here any minute. I looked at myself one last time in the mirror. I looked pretty good, if I am to say so myself. I had decided to accept Tony’s invitation to his father’s anniversary service and luncheon. I had ordered an outfit from a catalog, and I prayed that it would be as beautiful as the picture. I wasn’t disappointed; it was perfect.

It was a soft lime-green two-piece skirt suit and a matching hat. I accessorized it with a silver necklace, earrings, and bracelet. As I looked in the mirror, my mind drifted back to the conversation I had with Tony on Friday. When I told him I would attend, I could hear him exhale as if he had been holding his breath, hoping that I was not going to disappoint him.

“Thank you, Maureen,” he said. “You have made me so happy, and I am sure Ezra is going to be just as excited when I tell him you are coming. The service starts at 11:00 a.m., so I will pick you up by 10:15 a.m. That should give us enough time to get there, find parking, and get to our seats.”

“Tony,” I said, “I could meet you there. You don’t have to come over here for me.”

“No, it is only correct and gentlemanly that I pick you up—you are my guest. Plus, Maureen, I want to do this. It’s my way to say thank you.”

“OK, I will be ready for ten fifteen, Sunday morning.”

The ringing of the doorbell startled me out of my thoughts; that has to be Tony. I took up my handbag and walked to the door. I opened the front door to the street, and there he was. The look in his eyes told me he liked what he saw.

“Good morning, my dear. You look beautiful.” He reached up and took my hand and held it to his lips, kissing the back of my hand.

“Thank you,” I said. “You look quite handsome yourself.”

“Why, thank you, Ma’am.” He offered me his arm and walked me to the car. He opened the passenger side door for me and waited for me to sit down before closing the door.

The church was on Thomas Boyland Avenue. As we drove up, we were lucky to find a parking within the block. We walked up to the church. The sign on the front said “Tabernacle of Praise, the Church of the Living God. Joseph M. Bradley, Senior Pastor.” It listed the time of services and the days. Tony opened the door for me, and I stepped in. It was beautiful inside. I estimated it would hold about a two hundred people. The pulpit area was decorated with large vases of flowers. All around, members were coming in and taking their seats, some of them beautifully dressed. Many nodded and smiled as they passed by with a greeting of “good morning” or “grace and peace.” Tony took my hand and led me to the front.

The choir members started to file in.
